what happens when you pull the stop button (fire alarm) in an elevator?
does it automatically contact the fire department?

No, all it does is stop the carriage and start blaring a real loud alarm horn.
If there's nothing really wrong, you're going to be very embarrassed. The alarm is an addition to later elevators, as is closed circuit TV cameras in every car, amateur publicsex freaks take note.

The fire alarm and the stop button are two different things. Pushing the fire alarm button triggers the fire alarm for the building and may additionally stop the elevator at the next floor and open the door and/or contact the fire department. Pushing the stop button simply stops the elevator. Pulling the stop button simply disengages the stop function, i.e. allows the elevator to start moving again.
