20 years ago, when I used to sell them, the first portable model fit in a briefcase and weighed about 12 pounds.

My older three have cell phones (15, 15, 13) my youngest son (10) does not. My older two didn't get theirs until the beginning of this past school year when they started high school. They never cared to have one before then and one of them barely ever uses his. He just takes it with him when he walks to his friends house so I can call him when I want him home. The other one uses his a little more often but he isn't glued to his either. Both of their phones were free. One was my husband's old phone that we gave when my husband's was available for upgrade. The other was free when we got my netbook. Both boys are honor students and responsible. My middle son who is 13 has had his phone since he was 11. He wanted one but we told him he had to save up and buy it himself. Hed just that between chore allowance, birthday and Christmas and he bought his own phone. Nothing too expensive t a descent phone. He does text with friends a lot since he is a social bug but he's not glued to it and he takes good care of it. He's a straight A student and responsible. I don't see the big deal in preteens and teens having cell phones. They come in handy and they allow you to give your child some freedom while still being able to contact them and them to contact you. If someone has a child who can't handle the responsibility and don't take care of the phone, or go over minutes etc...then they shouldn't have one but every kid is different and every situation is different.
